Install the heads, paying close attention to the torquing procedure.
Make sure that the new head gaskets are oriented correctly. |
|
Since the torquing procedure involves torquing down the head, then
backing off the bolts by 360°, then retorquing them, then tightening them
90°, then another 90°. To keep track of the angles, mark the bolt head
with a marker at 12 o'clock before turning, so you have a reference. In
this picture, I used black to mark the loosening by 360°, and silver to
mark the retightening by 180°. Install the valve lifters, shims, and cams
according to the instructions. Be sure to seal the front cam caps with
sealant before installing. Install the new cam seals. Be sure to use a
good assembly lube to prevent a dry start condition. |

There is a specific procedure to compressing the timing belt
tensioner. Since I didn't have a vice large enough to compress it, and I
also didn't want to apply too much force, I quickly made a wood press to
compress it. It worked perfectly and took around the required 3 minutes to
compress. |
|
Install the timing belt covers and cam sprockets. Use the same hex
portion of the cams to retighten the cam sprocket bolts. |
|
Install the timing belt making sure that the tooth count between
timing marks is correct. It is somewhat difficult to get the marks to line
up exactly with the cover, so using the tooth cound is a much better
way. |

Prepare engine to be reinstalled into car. Push car under engine on
hoist and lower engine. |
|
Reconnect all disconnected wires, hoses and pipes. Fill oil and
coolant system. Bleed all air from coolant. Before installing the spark
plugs and connecting the fuel pump, crank the engine for 10-20 seconds to
build up oil pressure. Install spark plugs, connect fuel pump, and start
car and check for leaks! |
